Jain-Friendly South Indian Restaurant in Udaipur | No Onion No Garlic | Purohit Cafe

Purohit Cafe is Udaipur’s only Jain-friendly South Indian restaurant with a 37-year track record. Every dish on our menu is prepared without onion, without garlic, and without any non-vegetarian ingredients — the same way it has been since we opened in 1987. Pure vegetarian. No compromise. No separate “Jain menu” — our entire kitchen runs this way.

No Onion. No Garlic. Every Dish. Every Day.

For Jain guests, finding authentic South Indian food without onion and garlic is genuinely difficult. Most South Indian restaurants use onion in their sambar, garlic in their chutneys, or both in their masala fillings. At Purohit Cafe, none of this applies.

We have never used onion or garlic in any preparation — not in our sambar, not in our chutneys, not in our dosa fillings, not in our uttapam toppings. This is not a recent accommodation. It is how our kitchen has operated since 1987 — rooted in the same traditional values that the Purohit family brought with them when they opened Udaipur’s first South Indian restaurant nearly four decades ago.

When you order at Purohit Cafe, you do not need to ask. You do not need to specify “Jain.” Every item that leaves our kitchen is already prepared to that standard.

What to Order — Full Jain-Friendly Menu

Masala Dosa Our most popular dish — a crispy fermented dosa filled with a spiced potato masala prepared without onion or garlic. Served with slow-cooked sambar and freshly ground coconut chutney. Both the sambar and chutney are completely Jain-safe.

Ghee Podi Idly Two soft steamed idlis coated with freshly ground gun powder spice mix and pure ghee. No onion, no garlic — just the clean, aromatic heat of dried chillies, sesame, and lentils. Our signature dish and the most ordered item among Jain regulars.

Paper Masala Dosa Extra thin, paper-crisp dosa with potato masala. The potato filling is prepared without onion — spiced with mustard seeds, turmeric, green chillies, and curry leaves only.

Mysore Masala Dosa The red garlic chutney inside a traditional Mysore dosa contains garlic — but at Purohit Cafe, our version is prepared without garlic, maintaining the spice and depth through other ingredients. Fully Jain-safe.

Medu Vada Crispy outside, soft inside lentil doughnuts served with sambar and coconut chutney. No onion, no garlic in any component.

Steamed Idli The purest South Indian dish — fermented rice and lentil cakes steamed fresh every morning. Served with sambar and chutney. Completely Jain-friendly.

Uttapam Our plain, tomato, and mix veg uttapams are all prepared without onion. The cheese onion uttapam contains onion — this is the only item with onion on our menu, and it is clearly identified.

Ven Pongal Soft rice and lentil porridge tempered with pure ghee, black pepper, cumin, and curry leaves. No onion, no garlic. A hearty, warming Jain-safe dish.

Filter Coffee Brewed fresh to order, the traditional South Indian way. No additives. Just coffee powder, hot water through a metal filter, and milk.

Rasam Our thin peppery tomato soup is prepared without onion or garlic — spiced with tamarind, pepper, cumin, and tomato. Fully Jain-friendly.

Why Purohit Cafe Is the Right Choice for Jain Guests in Udaipur

The kitchen itself is Jain-safe — not just selected dishes. Many restaurants offer a “Jain option” where the same masala is used and onion or garlic is simply omitted from the garnish. At Purohit Cafe, onion and garlic have never been part of any base recipe. There is no cross-contamination risk because there is nothing to contaminate with.

37 years of consistency — Jain families in Udaipur have been dining at Purohit Cafe since 1987 with complete confidence. Our reputation among the Jain community is built on this consistent, uncompromising standard.

Pure vegetarian throughout — our kitchen has never handled non-vegetarian ingredients. Every utensil, every surface, every preparation is strictly vegetarian.

No need to ask or verify — when you visit Purohit Cafe, you can order anything on the menu without checking. That peace of mind is something we have offered since the beginning.
